Cryotherapy for Multiple Sclerosis

My levels of fatigue have changed dramatically to having virtually none for the whole week, I no longer need a sleep every afternoon, the numbness and pins and needles have reduced significantly, as well as my legs don’t experience the transient weakness. How Cryotherapy Can Help Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Sufferers

Many research studies in recent years have evaluated how Whole Body Cryotherapy techniques can reduce the symptoms of MS, highlighting the benefits of the technique particularly for fatigue and functional status.

In this case study, our client Rachel describes how regular Cryotherapy sessions have helped to alleviate her Multiple Sclerosis (MS) symptoms – to the extent the benefits have been ‘life changing’

Can you please describe the symptoms or condition you were feeling that led you to try Whole Body Cryotherapy?  How were they impacting you?

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) January 2021 and we are still not sure what type I have.

Over the last three years I have really struggled with fatigue (I generally need a sleep each day to get through the afternoon), the use of my legs has become more challenging (I am more unstable and there is transient weakness) and I have been getting more and more ticks which are painful, exhausting and very visible to others.

I have also been experiencing muscle spasms in my hands as well as numbness and pins and needles in both my feet and hands. I also have issues with my bladder and bowels.

Why did you think Cryotherapy could help?

It was actually a good friend of mine who discovered the Wellness Hub and the Cryo Hub inside and your offering of a whole body cryotherapy servce and the potential benefits for us with MS.

I went along as I am willing to try almost anything to alleviate my symptoms, as my 8-year-old daughter worries a lot about me so the more “normal” I can appear, the less worry she has.

How did you find the initial experience? Were there any changes to your symptoms?

After the first few sessions, I would walk out with significantly more energy than when I had turned up and that would last approximately 24 hours.

The first session I remember finding the first 60 seconds really tough, however now I am used to the process and I look forward to the experience.

As we began to increase my time from 3 minutes to 4 minutes 20 seconds, I really began to see huge changes. My levels of fatigue have changed dramatically to having virtually none for the whole week, I no longer need a sleep every afternoon, the numbness and pins and needles have reduced significantly, as well as my legs don’t experience the transient weakness.

The ticks have been the biggest visible change where as I would be having ticks at least ten times an hour, and now I may only get a couple in a week! Also, sleep at night can be a challenge, however since starting Whole Body Cryotherapy, my sleep has become more consistent which is another massive benefit.

Have you developed a routine which works for you?

I now schedule in one session a week and with the teams help, I have increased my duration of exposure to be nearer 5 minutes which has proved to be very beneficial. Also, to give me the best chance, I have been able to book a session on a Sunday before I go away on holiday on the Monday (the holiday will be extremely challenging for my body) and for the day after I return to reset my body.

What are the outcomes you’ve seen as part of your routine? Not just for your initial goals but any other effects?

I have been able to push myself to do “normal” things, most recently a trip to Legoland with my daughter.

I managed the whole day, with no sleep required which she thought was fabulous, having her Mummy “normal” like everyone else.

It has taken me a couple of weeks to recover with three sessions attended, however it is great to have the ability to reduce the symptoms. I really cannot thank you all enough. To say that Cryotherapy has been life changing would be the accurate description.
